Our History
We've Come This Far By Faith

St. Paul Presbyterian Church (USA) has a rich heritage and we remain thankful for those men and women who were blessed by God to establish a church that has not only existed but has stood firm in the High Point community for 116 years. The Foundation that was laid to the Glory of God has brought us thus far.

In August, 1904, Rev. L.D. Twine, minister  of Thomasville Second Presbyterian Church, held a worship service with six men and four women in what was known as the Old Freemen's School House. On November 20, 1904, Dr. W.H. Bryant from Church Street Church in Salisbury, N.C. and Dr. J.J. Wilson of St. James Presbyterian Church in Greensboro, N.C., assisted by elders from the Thomasville Second Presbyterian Church, officially organized Perry Street Presbyterian Church and ordained three Elders and three Deacons. Thus, Rev. L.D. Twine was the Founder.

Between 1905 until 1919, several ministers including Rev. J.C. Fisher, Rev. William Burton, Rev. J.C. and James served St. Paul. In 1919, Rev. J.H. Clement became the fifth minister and the church was erected at 109 Perry Street, now North Centennial Street. Rev. J.H. Clement served from 1919-1929 and Rev. Chester A. Washington, Rev. Charles Henry Clay White served during the period 1929-1934. Some other pastors and Temporary Supply ministers down through the years from 1934-1950 include Rev. Alfonso W. Waddell, Rev. James Cannon, Rev. T. Jenkins, Rev. John Pharr and Rev. James W. Brown.

Rev. Robert A. Massey, Sr. was installed as Pastor in 1972 and remained until 1980, Rev. Robert A, Shirley was our Pulpit Supply from 1981 until 1985 when Rev. Darrell Van Pelt became Interim Minister. Rev. E.B. Freeman, Jr. served as our Pastor from 1987 until 2011.

St. Paul Presbyterian Church has had name changes and locations as follows:
From Freeman School House to Cherry Street Presbyterian Church, then Second Presbyterian Church in 1952, then our relocation to 210 Fourth Street and name change to St. Paul United Presbyterian Church in 1961 and then St. Paul Presbyterian Church (USA) in 1987.

In 1998 the church approved the Relocation/Redevelopment Plan and in 1999, 6.3 acres of land and a house were purchased at 309 Summit Road, High Point, N.C.  We worshiped in the renovated house beginning in 2001 and the groundbreaking/dedication of new property was in April 2003. The Fellowship Hall was completed in 2004. We continue to worship at Summit Road. We thank God for His many blessings as we continue to do His Will.
